The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 49 Crab

Weezer is on tour!  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

In honor of the new album announcement and Ric Ocasek, I'm going to go through the Green Album and it's b-sides.

The forty-ninth Weezer Song of the Day is Crab, which is the fifth song on the The Green Album

I didn't get this out earlier because this is a tough week family-wise.  August 5th was the 15th anniversary of my brother's death.  I tried writing something for days, but it wouldn't come out in an intelligible way.
It's great and exciting that Weezer is coming out with a new record and it's going to be 'classic' and Rock, but it's hard not having my brother here to share the experience with, but I do have a music-loving daughter to share it with me.

Crab live by Weezer in 2001 in Germany:

I have never seen Crab performed live.  According to Setlist.fm it has been played live 58 times, all in 2001-2002.

Crab is the fifth song on the Green Album.  It's a quick, up tempo Green diddy about frustrating women being crabby.  The vocals are fairly interesting and it has a bit of an understated riff.  The solo is a bit bland on the album, but pops better in the live version above.

Bob Along!

What do you guys think?

So why did I create this blog?  To document my Weezer Song Project.  Over the next year, I am going to attempt to listen to every...EVERY Weezer song recorded.  All the album tracks and b-sides will be easy, but there are some unreleased songs that may or not be accessible.  Hopefully, the search (and destroy) will be fun to follow.  At the moment, the list has 214 songs!  My list includes You Gave Your Love to me Softly, Longtime SunshineTurn Me Round, Getting Up and Leaving, Waiting on You, and Back to the Shack.  We learned early this year that a new Weezer record is on the way and we got to hear Back to the Shack twice on the Weezer Cruise II.

So here is the master list from Karl et al. on Weezerpedia!
I will soon publish my Google Doc Spreadsheet, which will document my progress.

The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 48 Island in the Sun

Weezer is on tour!  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

In honor of the new album announcement and Ric Ocasek, I'm going to go through the Green Album and it's b-sides.

The forty-eighth Weezer Song of the Day is Island in the Sun, which is the fourth song on the The Green Album and the second single. It has the most listens on Spotify of any Weezer song: nearly 22 million!

Island in the Sun got two different videos made.  The first was made by Marcos Siega featuring Mikey Welsh and the second was by Spike Jonze with only Rivers, Pat and Brian and a lot of wild animals.

Island In the Sun Official Video #1 by Weezer:

Island In the Sun Official Video #2 by Weezer:

I have seen Island in the Sun performed live 9 times.  According to Setlist.fm it has been played live 469 times, since it was first played live in Austin, TX in February 2001.  It was certainly very cool to hear it played on an island in the sun in the Bahamas this year.

Island in the Sun is the fourth song on the Green Album and was the second single.  The song was originally demoed in 1999 by Rivers and Ric Ocasek liked it so much, he insisted on reworking it until it made the record.  It is also noted that it may be Brian's favorite Weezer song.  It is a pop masterpiece and is one of the most recognizable post-Pinkerton Weezer songs by the general public, which is probably why it has the most Spotify plays.

I find it downright hilarious that this pop tune follows the fairly dark Hash Pipe on the record.  I can't think of a way they could be more lyrically different.

Rock!

The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 47 Photograph

Weezer is on tour!  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

It's #WeezerWednesday, watch for a new video on Youtube!  Here is the playlist.

Everything Will Be Alright in the End now has a Weezerpedia page!

In honor of the new album announcement and Ric Ocasek, I'm going to go through the Green Album and it's b-sides.

The forty-seventh Weezer Song of the Day is Photograph, which is the second song on the The Green Album

Photograph Official Video by Weezer:

The video was shot and directed by Karl Koch.  It is Scott Shriner's Weezer video debut!

I have seen Photograph performed live 5 times.  According to Setlist.fm it has been played live 255 times, since it was first played live in Japan in April 2001.  On the 2014 Spring/Summer tour, Photograph along with Blur's Song 2 have been the set closers.  Pat has been taking over on guitar and vocals and Rivers plays drums on these two songs before the encore break.  This practice is a throwback to the 2005 tour.

Photograph is the second song on the Green Album and was the second single.  The song was originally called "If you Want It."  The song features vocal harmonies in a power-pop crescendo.  It's a song about never giving up on love if you want it.  It's an really enjoyable song that isn't overly complicated.  The only real ding is the guitar solo is a bit too short and simple, but the great hook makes up for it.

Rock!

The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 46 Don't Let Go

Weezer is on tour!  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

It's #WeezerWednesday, watch for a new video on Youtube!  Here is the playlist.

Everything Will Be Alright in the End now has a Weezerpedia page!

In honor of the new album announcement and Ric Ocasek, I'm going to go through the Green Album and it's b-sides.

The forty-sixth Weezer Song of the Day is Don't Let Go, which is the lead track of The Green Album

Don't Let Go by Weezer:
(2005 AOL Session)

I have seen Don't Let Go performed live 3 times.  According to Setlist.fm it has been played fewer than 160 times, since it was first played live in February 2001.

Don't Let Go begins with the kick drum and feels like a Weezer song.  It was a great choice to start out The Green Album.  It's a damned happy song with a fun guitar solo.  There were several changes made to the recorded version of the song after initial pressings and especially the live version.

It is kind of a transitional song between Pinkerton and Green.  The sound is very Green, but it is thematically reminiscent of 1990's Weezer.  The lyrics are akin to love worship, even going as far as:

I'll be down on my knees begging for that girl to stay

Rock!

The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 45 Hash Pipe

Weezer is on tour!  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

Have you been following the #WeezerWednesday Youtube videos?  Here is the playlist.
In the most recent one, we now have a title for Weezer's new album:

Everything Will be Alright in the End

The video also features a sweet studio recording of Back to the Shack

The forty-fifth Weezer Song of the Day is Hash Pipe, which is another summer songs of 2000 demo, which was officially released on The Green Album.  It was the first single released and was the first SS2K song to be officially released.

Hash Pipe by Weezer got a real music video:

A Fantastic Live performance from 2001 on the MTV Movie Awards with pyrotechnics!

I have seen Hash Pipe performed live 8 times.  According to Setlist.fm it has been played over 460 times since it was first played live June 16th, 2000.

Hash Pipe begins with an incredible, crunchy guitar riff.  According to Weezerpedia, Rivers was inspired partially by the Peter Gunn Theme, featured as the music for the video game Spy Hunter.  The lyrics were long-disputed, but they are now published on Weezerpedia.  Rivers' falsetto vocals are outstanding and match the song well.  I like the backing vocals, too.

It is the best song on the Green Album.  Maybe subconsciously my love for playing Spy Hunter influences my love for this song...especially live!

Undone!

The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 43 My Brain & Song 44 Losing My Mind

Weezer is on tour!  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

So I got to see Weezer twice in three days in Durham and St Pete.  The show I didn't go to in St. Augustine, because of travel, Pat did this:

I am saddened to learn of the death of Rik Mayall.  He, along withe other three Young Ones, changed my life.  If you have never seen The Young Ones, seek it out.  It is disgustingly hilarious.  It was shown on MTV in the late 1980's in the middle of the night.  My brother and I would stay up to watch it and record it on VHS tapes.  The humor in this show was nothing like anything I had seen before and 'primed me' for the punk rock I would discover and appreciate over the next few years.  Watching The Young Ones was one of the ways I spent time with Michael then.  We often made jokes referencing TYO for the decade to come.

The forty-third  Weezer Song of the Day is My Brain, which is another summer songs of 2000 demo, which was officially released on Alone II as My Brain is Working Overtime.

The forty-forth Weezer Song of the Day is Losing My Mind, which is a heavily reworked version of  My Brain, which contended for the Make Believe and was eventually released on Death to False Metal.

My Mind is Working Overtime by Weezer

My Brain Demo by Weezer

Losing My Mind by Weezer

I have never seen any version of this song performed live.  According to Setlist.fm My Brain was played a few times in 2000, but Losing My Mind has never been played live.

The original demo has been through a lot of rework and the lyrics are completely different for the finally released song, Losing My Mind.

My Brain is more of a rock song focused on guitars, while Losing My Mind is focused on vocals and the guitar is almost muted.  Except for the electric solo, which is interestingly broken into small pieces and distributed throughout the song.

I have to say that I enjoy all three, but the SS2K demo version is my favorite.

Pretty Rad!

The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 42 Peace and Quiet

Weezer is on tour!  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

Weezer is playing TOMORROW, June 5th in Durham, NC!  Rock Music!

The forty-second  Weezer Song of the Day is Peace and Quiet, which is another summer songs of 2000 demo, which is still officially unreleased.

Peace and Quiet by Weezer

I have never seen this song performed live.  According to Setlist.fm it was played live 14 times in 2000.

Peace and Quiet is a SS2K song not to be confused withe Make Believe song Peace.  This is more of a grunge-influenced song.  Put Dave Grohl on vocals and it could pass as a Foo Fighters song.

There is a big instrumental part in the middle of the song with an exciting guitar solo with ecstatic drums.

The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Songs 40 My Best Friends are Gone 41 Brightening Day

Weezer is playing LIVE TOMORROW May 31 at the Bottle Rock Festival in Napa Valley, CA.  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

Less than a week until Weezer in Durham, NC!  I can't wait!

The fortieth  Weezer Song of the Day is My Best Friends are Gone, which is another summer songs of 2000 demo, which was revived and reworked on for a Green album b-side.

The forty-first Weezer Song of the Day is Brightening Day, which is what My Best Friends are Gone evolved into and was officially released on the UK Island in the Sun single.

Brightening Day by Weezer

I have never seen either of these songs performed live!  According to Setlist.fm neither have ever been played live by Weezer!

Brightening Day is one of the few Summer songs of 2000 which actually got an official release!  The evolution from My Best Friends are Gone seems to be little more than a name change and Ric Ocasek's production.  It is a short and powerful pop tune.  The guitar solo is long and awesome, and quite different from most Green album work.

The interesting part of this song is the song structure.  It has no real chorus.  The lyrics are about being abandoned by your friends and ending up in hell.
So we'll burn in hell
And think that it's swell
Just as long as we get our own rooms.

Rockin!

Well that was a busy week!  I'm back on track now!

Weezer's Spring Tour is on hold until the end of May.  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

Less than two weeks until Weezer in Durham, NC!  I can't wait!

For the thirty-nineth  Weezer Song of the Day, I chose Dope Nose, which is another summer songs of 2000 demo, which was released on Maladroit

Dope Nose Official Video by Weezer
Featuring an awesome Rivers beard!

I have seen Dope Nose performed live 5 times!  According to Setlist.fm it has been played live 255 times beginning on my birthday in 2000!

Dope Nose is one of the few Summer songs of 2000 which actually got an official release and an official video!  It is a short and rockin' power pop track, which evolved a bit from demo to release.

It is often sung live by Scott recently, which is welcome.  Scott does a great job on vocals!

Weezer's Spring Tour is on hold until the end of May.  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

Preacher's Son by Weezer

I have not seen Preacher's Son performed live.  According to Setlist.fm it has been played live 9 times in the summer of 2000.

Preacher's Son is a rockin' demo song.  Rivers' vocals are sung in a different style from songs of this era.

Preacher's Son an interesting twist on the preacher's daughter concept.  But he's still getting it on!

The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 37 Too Late to Try

Weezer's Spring Tour is on hold until the end of May.  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

For the thirty-seventh Weezer Song of the Day, I chose Too Late to Try, which is another summer songs of 2000 demo, which is still officially unreleased.  It is astounding to me that this and some other SS2k songs haven't made it onto an official release.  They have to be on the Deluxe Green Album one day!

(Embed not available)

Too Late to Try Live in Japan:

I have not seen Too Late to Try performed live.  According to Setlist.fm it has been played live 36 times over the summer of 2000 tour in Canada, the USA and Japan.

Too Late to Try is a rockin' demo song.  Crunchy guitar intro and a super hook in the guitar solos!

What are the lyrics about?  Is Too Late to Try about getting the band back together?  Maybe we'll find out one day for sure, but the gang sounds a lot like Weezer in the late 1990's.  Of course, I'm super happy this sentiment didn't settle in after Matt left to pursue The Rentals full-time.

We need to hear TLtT live soon!

The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 36 O Girl

Weezer's Spring Tour is on hold until the end of May.  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

For the thirty-sixth Weezer Song of the Day, I chose O Girl, which is another summer songs of 2000 demo, which is still officially unreleased.  It was in the running for The Green Album.

O Girl by Weezer:

O Girl live at Lupo's in Providence:

I have not seen O Girl performed live.  According to Setlist.fm it has only been played live 6 times in the summer of 2000.

O Girl is an demo song which rocks the socks.  It sounds familiar to any Weezer fan.  Rivers' vocals fit in withe guitars like a glove.

We need to hear it live soon!

Rockin' Demo!

What do you guys think?

This has got to be on a Green album deluxe edition, right?

Project Info:

PLW Rater!  It's not quite Leonard Maltin, but it will work.

The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 35 On the Edge

Weezer's Spring Tour is on hold until the end of May.  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

For the thirty-fifth Weezer Song of the Day, I chose On the Edge, which is another summer songs of 2000 demo, which is still officially unreleased.

On the Edge by Weezer:

I have not seen On the Edge performed live, because according to Setlist.fm it has never been played live!

On the Edge is an demo song with tons of promise!  I don't like the mix, but the music is golden!  The lyrics are solid, but the vocals sound off to me.  This one should be reworked into at least a b-side.

The guitars are genius especially the solos.  I'd like to hear them higher in the mix along withe bass.  I wonder why it's never been played live?

Could be a rockin' tune!!

What do you guys think?

How would you change this demo?

The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 34 Superstar

Weezer's Spring Tour is on hold until the end of May.  Check the front page of Weezerpedia.com and Weezertix.com for the details.

For the thirty-fourth Weezer Song of the Day, I chose Superstar, which is another summer songs of 2000 demo, which is still officially unreleased.  It was revived as a demo for Make Believe, but didn't make the cut.

Superstar by Weezer:

Superstar live in Japan 2000:

I have not seen Superstar performed live.  According to Setlist.fm it was played live by Weezer 41 times from 2000 through 2002.

Superstar is an outstanding demo song except for one thing.  I don't like the vocals at all for the verses.  This could be a 5-star song, if he continued the singing style of the choruses into the entire song.  The music is fantastic and metally.  The choruses make this song and how did it not make Death to False Metal?

The lyrics are about what I call, 'lead singer syndrome' like the metal guys of the 80's and 90's   Rivers isn't one of these, but wishes he was.  My favorite lyric, "I never summon things from hell."

Time for a Goat Punishment reunion!

ROCK OUT!

What do you guys think?

Love the vocals or hate them?
