The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 13 The Good Life

#Pinkerton

Leading up to the beginning of Weezer's Spring Tour, I'm going to feature PINKERTON era songs, including all 10 songs off the record, culminating on April 1st.  We have tickets to go see the Myrtle Beach House of Blues show!

For the thirteenth Weezer Song of the Day, Pinkerton continues with track #6 The Good Life.  It was never part of the Songs from the Black Hole project, and along with Across the Sea were in the direction Pinkerton went.

The video hit home for me as I was still delivering pizza at the time in late 1996 with a bachelor's degree.  I never got to deliver pizza to anyone interesting.  The studio portion of the video is entertaining with Rivers and Brian acting serious and playing guitar.  Pat and Matt get progressively more goofy and seem to be mocking the music video itself.  Are the studio shots in this video from the engineer's point of view?

The Good Life has a real music video!

I've seen The Good Life performed live 4 times.  According to Setlist.fm it has been played live 275 times since 1996.

The Good Life is an autobiographical lament about Rivers' time at Harvard after his leg surgery.  He is recovering and walking with a cane, but longing for the rock star life again.  It is in direct opposition to the lyrics of Across the Sea, in which he wants a girl to feel, because he can't live on "words and dreams and a million screams."

Now, the good life is being a rock star on tour shaking booty all night.  The stark difference between touring and his lonely time at Harvard comes through.  Most rock stars don't go to Harvard after a world tour, but Rivers most certainly isn't your standard rock star.  How could he not write about feeling like an old man at this stage?

"I just need to admit I want sugar in my tea"

Rocking it Out!

What do you guys think?

Project Info:
So why did I create this blog?  To document my Weezer Song Project.  Over the next year, I am going to attempt to listen to every...EVERY Weezer song recorded.  All the album tracks and b-sides will be easy, but there are some unreleased songs that may or not be accessible.  Hopefully, the search (and destroy) will be fun to follow.  At the moment, the list has 213 songs!  My list includes You Gave Your Love to me Softly, Longtime SunshineTurn Me Round, Waiting on You, and Back to the Shack.  We learned early this year that a new Weezer record is on the way and we got to hear Back to the Shack twice on the Weezer Cruise II.

So here is the master list from Karl et al. on Weezerpedia!
I will soon publish my Google Doc Spreadsheet, which will document my progress.
Here is my Spotify playlist.

PLW Rater!  It's not quite Leonard Maltin, but it will work.
1 - Go get a beer...It's still a Weezer song, but it's a good time to rent a beer
2 - Head Bobber...The song causes at least moderate movement
3 - Rock it out...Banging of the head and the arm is in the air \m/
4 - Undone...No choice but to jump around
