The Paul Loves Weezer Project - Song 15 El Scorcho

#Pinkerton

Leading up to the beginning of Weezer's Spring Tour, I'm going to feature PINKERTON era songs, including all 10 songs off the record, culminating on April 1st.  We have tickets to go see the Myrtle Beach House of Blues show!

6 Days 'til Weezer!

For the fifteenth Weezer Song of the Day, Pinkerton continues with track #7 El Scorcho.  It was written at Harvard and meant for Pinkerton.  TIL from Weezerpedia that Del Scorcho hot sauce was the inspiration for the song's name.  We don't have Del Tacos and I've never eaten at one.

I still have Tragic Girl stuck in my head today.  It would have made an excellent addition to Pinkerton.

The video had some controversy at the time, when Rivers and director Mark Romanek disagreed about the video's direction.  Romanek took his name off of it for years, but now the only one available is his director's cut.

El Scorcho has a real music video!

Here is the currently available Director's Cut:

And a cool version from the "Yahoo Hootenanny" in 2008:

I've seen El Scorcho performed live 8 times.  According to Setlist.fm it has been played live 416 times since 1996 and is the 10th most performed Weezer song.  It is a great live song and everyone really gets into it.  The guitar solo is fantastic.

El Scorcho is about wanting to ask a girl out, but fearing rejection, but unlike Why Bother? he actually asks her out to the Green Day concert.  Rivers is self deprecating about his inability to talk about his feelings, but can only write and sing about them.

El Scorcho has a direct reference to Madame Butterfly quoted in the lyrics:

"listening to Cio-Cio San fall in love all over again."

Rocking it Out!

What do you guys think?

Why you wanna go and do me like that?

Project Info:
So why did I create this blog?  To document my Weezer Song Project.  Over the next year, I am going to attempt to listen to every...EVERY Weezer song recorded.  All the album tracks and b-sides will be easy, but there are some unreleased songs that may or not be accessible.  Hopefully, the search (and destroy) will be fun to follow.  At the moment, the list has 213 songs!  My list includes You Gave Your Love to me Softly, Longtime SunshineTurn Me Round, Waiting on You, and Back to the Shack.  We learned early this year that a new Weezer record is on the way and we got to hear Back to the Shack twice on the Weezer Cruise II.

So here is the master list from Karl et al. on Weezerpedia!
I will soon publish my Google Doc Spreadsheet, which will document my progress.
Here is my Spotify playlist.

PLW Rater!  It's not quite Leonard Maltin, but it will work.
1 - Go get a beer...It's still a Weezer song, but it's a good time to rent a beer
2 - Head Bobber...The song causes at least moderate movement
3 - Rock it out...Banging of the head and the arm is in the air \m/
4 - Undone...No choice but to jump around
